Height & Mass: The spoil heap is approximately 190 to 200 meters high and consists of around 140 million tons of salt residue. Origin: Since 1954, solid residues from underground potash mining have been dumped there. The heap grows by about 2 million tons per year. Future & Environment: K+S has plans to cover and revegetate the spoil heap with soil and construction debris under the motto "The spoil heap will go green" to prevent saline wastewater. However, these plans are controversial in the region due to the long duration and the quantities of material involved. Visit: Unlike "Monte Kali" in Heringen, the spoil heap in Neuhof-Ellers is not normally open to the public. However, guided tours or events are occasionally available upon prior request to the K+S plant.
