Part of the Leek Branch of the Caldon Canal the pool allows boats to turn around before the tunnel. The Churnet Way long distance walking trail and NCN 559 follow the canal towpath past the pool.

Nice tree-lined trail for MTB and Gravel riding. Can be busy with walkers, runners and dogs so take a bell and use it.

Quiet little gem of Staffordshire walking Can be ridden on gravel/mtb. It’s an alternative to Couldon canal

Quiet track with good views of the surrounding countryside. Be considerate of other users and take care not to startle horses (and their riders)!

The whole ride along the lively canal is worth it.

Despite the fact that this route heads straight past Alton Towers it’s surprisingly quiet, though it could do with some resurfacing

The main canal path is really well surfaced however this section over the tunnel has a number of steep steps and pointless gates and obstacles, while there is a path to avoid the steps all of the gates are locked so you’ll still have to struggle with the bike

This section of the path - where two canals (and their respective tow paths) intersect - is a magnificent example of Victorian engineering at its best. Today's road engineers do the same thing - clover leaf intersections with flyovers, bridges and underpasses - but here it is done with canals instead of roads!

Riding through here during bluebells season is an absolute joy - several kilometres of the path are blanketed with bluebells on both sides. Simply glorious.

Needs some serious upgrading to make this properly accessible to most riders
