A remnant of Merthyr's past. This bridge carried a railway line that either took you through a tunnel to Aberdare or sent you north towards Cefn Coed and on to Brecon via Torpantau. Under the bridge was the Merthyr to Cardiff Glamorganshire canal which carried the produce of Cyfarthfa iron works to the ports of Cardiff which was then shipped all over the world.

To access this area is a very steep incline and decline into this valley section 7- 9% gradient in either direction. The Taf Fechan LNR comprises about 2.5 km of river with steep valley sides of Carboniferous limestone. The river has eroded the limestone into a narrow gorge in the centre of the site. A mosaic of deciduous woodland on the slopes with a canopy of Beech, Birch and Ash, gives way to Alder and Grey Willow closer to the river.

the lower reservoir has a nice flat road next to it, a welcome relief after the lumpy roads that lead to it from either direction.

A wooden drawbridge carried the road over the canal and was replaced by a fixed bridge after navigation on the canal ceased in the 1930s. Before the canal reopened to boats in 1970, a steel drawbridge with an electric operating mechanism was installed. There are four other drawbridges along the canal to the west. They are for farmers to access fields and are less elaborate than the one at Talybont. Drawbridges saved the canal company the expense of building stone bridges over the canal at these locations.

This is a nice stone bridge along the cyclepath just outside Merthyr Tydfil which makes a pretty spot to stop and take a picture.

While on the Taff Trail the viaduct suddenly looms out of the trees, another fantastic example of the amazing construction skills of our industrial past, take a moment to stop and have a proper look.

This reservoir is located in the breathtaking Brecon Beacons of Wales. It is part of a series of reservoirs within the Taff Fechan Valley and was constructed between 1923 and 1927 to supply water to the South Wales Valleys and Cardiff. It's a gorgeous location to enjoy some time out in nature and features walking trails, woodland and lovely surrounding views.

Great to get between the villages.

Rode this uphill from the resevoir in dry conditions. Can't say i share some other commentors confidence, I was on 700x40 tyres and found it very tough going with alot of walking. However, once up, it's a beautifully empty area, didn't see a soul. Crossed over the moor (bog) to the quarry using the footpath rather than the byway/bridlepath as they are in terrible condition thanks to motor traffic.

If climbing this is the end of the steep section, if descending this is the start of a blue/red rocky descent. Insane views from high up MTB or brave graveller only

Lovely way to move around the area safely and in a relaxed fashion surrounded by nature. I did it a lot on a fat bike loaded with camping gear from Brecon to Crickhowell, but a mountain or gravel bike would be ideal.

Talybont Reservoir is a great asset to the local scenery and is easy on the eye. It is surrounded by hiking and biking trails, but it is disappointing that this big water source can't be used for water recreation purposes.
