The lock is near Bank Mill Bridge No 143 (to the northwest) and Bullbeggers Lane Winding Hole (to the southeast). There is good mooring available nearby, and it's a short walk into Berkhamsted.

I stopped a little way down this path, found a great spot to enjoy the views and have a spot of 🥪

Cycled this in dry weather on my gravel bike in summer and really enjoyed every part of it. A little overgrown in a few places. I would imagine in the wet or after heavy rainfall, this to be hard work.

Excellent route virtually all off-road!

This is a pleasant cycleway between Harpenden and Luton with very little traffic during the day. It's got a good surface and nice views, especially during the autumn time with the falling leaves.

Worth spending a few moments here to admire the views

Popular area for kite flying and paragliding

Spacious, calm road. Majority of the car drivers are respectful to cyclists and overtaking cautiously.

Note that the line runs well below street level and thus needs to be accessed by a longer flight of stairs at this entry point. With a bikepacking load, a better alternative seems to be a ramp on Ambrose Lane, which I only discovered in hindsight.

Great gravel and amazing views in all directions

If you're climbing up toward Telegraph Hill, definitely stop to admire the arching tree canopy. :)

This is a fun climb that peaks at around 15% toward Telegraph Hill. On a gravel bike, the steepest bits also require navigation over/around tree roots.

3 statues celebrating 3 local heros: Capability Brown designed the River Lea lakes on the valley bottom and the landscape on the other side of the valley, all part of the Luton Hoo estate; Eric Morecambe who lived in Harpenden (the route connects Luton & Harpenden) and used to go bird watching in the are; the Sea Scout celebrates the long-established Sea Scout troop based on the shore of the Lea lakes

This Tower was built in memory of Francis Egerton, who was the Third Duke of Bridgewater. Egerton was an expert in inland navigation. He was involved in the construction of the Bridgewater Canal (joining Worsley and Manchester), which is the first modern British canal. He also built the canal joining Liverpool and Manchester. Not only that, but he made 2 million pounds out of these adventures and ventures. Be sure to walk up to the top of the Tower. The views from up there are tremendous.
