Easy route, suitable for all bikes and ages. Can be bumpy in places.

Always a heart-in-mouth traverse for me, on the rare occasion I need to use it. There's a "cycle track" of sorts hewn out, which is fine if you stay slow and stick to it, but I just don't trust this track.

Bannister Green Halt was sited on the up side of the line and consisted of a clinker platform with timber facing raised to rail level; it was attended by staff from Felsted or Rayne Stations. It was one of two halts built by the GER in 1922 to attract passengers to the railway and counteract the then recently introduced bus service. Passengers joining or alighting at the halt were required to use retractable steps mounted by the side of the coach and operated by the guard.

The station closed in 1952, with the line being used for freight until it was closed in 1972. Only thing remains is crossing keeper's cottage

Accessing from Ugley Green, the narrow entrance to the bridleway can be easily missed and may also not seem that appealing at first, but the bridleway widens considerably and offers scenic views.

Heading out of Braintree you hit the main road after this point. Careful of the traffic!

Just be careful here after they have trimmed the bushes. Plenty of thorns on the track. Tubeless should be ok.

Avoid!! Unridable in winter

The off-road stretch is only traversable in the summer months. Outside that, mudbath.

Classic cafe stop in the area, always plenty of cyclists and places to put your bike.

Lovely quiet stretch from Barwick to Standon, great views and a couple of cheeky climbs northbound.

A brilliant pub with great food on a really nice off-road route through this areas. Definitely worth the ride and stop to “rehydrate” and refuel. The tables outside are great for stopping, getting off the bike and recapping the ride.

An awesome bit of double track - going west is uphill. Don't use the gravel track adjacent as this is the farm track.

Very short section over river at Dunmow end
