The Manchester Ship Canal is a 36-mile-long (58 km) inland waterway in the North West of England linking Manchester to the Irish Sea. Starting at the Mersey Estuary at Eastham, near Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, it generally follows the original routes of the rivers Mersey and Irwell through the historic counties of Cheshire and Lancashire before joining the latter at Salford Quays. Several sets of locks lift vessels about 60 ft (18 m) to the canal's terminus in Manchester. Landmarks along its route include the Barton Swing Aqueduct, the world's only swing aqueduct, and Trafford Park, the world's first planned industrial estate and one of the largest in Europe.

Watch out for trail sabotage, encountered a couple of logs across the path.

The canal is a 36-mile waterway connecting the Mersey Estuary to the Port of Manchester, and Latchford Locks are a set of locks along this route, particularly in Warrington.

Great place for families to visit on a nice day

Fantastic coffee and cakes on this floating cafe. A great option for a peaceful mid ride stop - sit on the canal banks and take it all in.

Canal barge cafe with some outdoor benches to take a load off. Well worth a stop on a nice day.

The Bridgewater Canal connects Runcorn, Manchester and Leigh. It was originally built to transport coal from mines in Worsley to Manchester. Now it is forms part of the 40 mile (64 km) Bridgewater Way, a scheme to redevelop the canal, especially for cyclists.

Lovely forested off-road packed trail under trees with some bridges overhead. Some bits with loose chunky gravel but nice and flat all along.

Open 12-5 every day, great ice cream, lots of space for your bike. Little farm with cute goats and a curious ostrich. Great pit-stop, also have a sunflower field in season
