The collegiate church, to which the twin towers belonged, is said to have been consecrated in 1172 in the presence of Frederick Barbarossa and Udo of Naumburg. The documents proving this, however, have proven to be forgeries.[1] The church was built in the Romanesque style from 1165 to 1172 out of bricks.[3] The wooden roof trusses of the towers date from 1336.[1] The collegiate church had a bad reputation among the reformers and was dissolved in 1543.[2] Just a few decades later, the nave had fallen into disrepair, but the west tower remained intact. In 1618, the north tower received its baroque roof.[2] The city took over the buildings after the monastery was dissolved and set up a school in them in 1665. 20 years later, the towers were converted into a prison and served as such for 200 years.[1] At the beginning of the 17th century, the nave was rebuilt and from 1669 to 1671[1] a widows' and orphans' home was set up in it. The building took on its current form in the 19th century: in 1810[1] it was rebuilt after a fire and in the middle of the century a half-timbered building was added. It was used as a prison and workhouse. The master builder Friedrich Sprenger carried out extensive repairs to the tower complex from 1871 to 1873[1] and removed some extensions. During the GDR era, a museum for medieval craftsmanship was located in the Red Tips until 1972. In June 2013, a permanent exhibition on the building opened, so that it can now be visited regularly again. Altenburg's importance as a former residential and trading town is reflected in the extensive market square. Town and patrician houses from different eras blend harmoniously into one another and convey a southern flair. The structural dominant features are the centrally located town hall and the Brethren Church on the west side of the impressive square.

The complex originally served as a protective bulwark and border vestment for Altenburg. The first documented lords of the castle were Heinrich von Kohren and Hugo zu Stolberg. After that, the castle had many different owners, including von der Gabelentz and Zehmen. In 1632, during the Thirty Years' War, the castle burned down. After that, the manor also fell into disrepair and was finally hardly habitable. In 1880, however, Börries Freiherr von Münchhausen (from whose noble family the famous lying baron comes) bought the estate and had it completely rebuilt over the next 6 years. It is still in the restored condition today.
