Apparently regarded by the Victorians as "ill-planned and untidy", but now quite possibly one the most picturesque Moors villages, Hutton-le-Hole is a very popular starting point for hikes. Fairly sizeable car park just on the eastern side of the village off the road to Lastingham. This is a great access point to jump onto the Cleveland Way from Cleveland Road. There is a car park a few hundred metres away to ditch the vehicle. This also happens to be an exceptional viewing point to enjoy the scenes of North York Moors

Note that the Abbey itself is English Heritage and has both cafe and toilets available accessible without paying admission/requiring membership. The only downside is that to get there from Rievaulx Terrace it is down a steep hill.

Cafe & bike shop both take card payments (and apple payments even if theres no signal). Great place to stop for a slice of cake, sandwich and a coffee. Or bike repairs if needed (and a bit of clothes shopping with all the latest brands there).

Easy parking (ice cream van in summer!) at Sheep Wash, great path through the coniferous wood running along the southern edge of the reservoir, awesome views, cool breeze across the water, option to follow numerous tracks east into the woods around Cote Garth and Golden Square. Lots of familys, dog walkers and hikers - something for everyone here.

This section is good to ride on, nice countryside, scenic and good singletrack which are compact and easy to ride on. Bad weather would not really make these surfaces worse.

The scenery is nice in this area. You can see for miles in many parts. This is a slightly elevated area, the wind is far more stronger as it is an exposed area

Sheriffs Pit is the location of an old iron mine. The views here are mint, you can see for miles through the valleys at the side of the double track

Major junction of Rudland Rigg running broadly north-south and the Lyke Wake Walk running broadly east-west. West takes you past Round Hill to Urra Moor and the car park at Clay Bank, east follows the disused Farndale Railway. Most of the tracks around this location are very wide and easy walking.

Highest point in the North York Moors with beautiful views in all directions. From here you can take several options to cycle down.

Square Corner might just be a car park, but this is a car park to end all car parks! On Thimbleby Moor, with views of the Black Hambleton hill to the south and with beautiful views down the valley to the town of Osmotherley to the west. Life is good again.

Hutton-le-Hole is often considered one of the prettiest villages in the whole of North York Moors National Park, with easy access to the moorlands. The village itself has a good pub, and if you have time to stop on your MTB tour, don't miss its Ryedale Folk Museum, which is ace! The tree in the rather unusual green in the middle of the village (with a stream running through it!) has a bench under it, and it's a lovely place to sit if you're taking a break here.
