Notre-Dame Cathedral, Lausanne The cathedral was not consecrated until 1275 by Emperor Rudolf of Habsburg and Pope Gregory X. Then Jean Cotereel, the third master builder, took over the building site and built the western part, which he equipped with a porch and two towers, one of which carries the bells. The other tower was not completed. The very original painted portal was added to the south façade around 1225-1235. The cathedral was not consecrated until 1275 by Emperor Rudolf of Habsburg and Pope Gregory X. In 1536, the cathedral was significantly altered during the Reformation, when a new space for worship was created in the nave. It was then restored several times in the 18th and 19th centuries, notably under the direction of the famous French architect Eugène-Emmanuel Viollet-le-Duc. The interior of the cathedral is characterized by an exceptional use of color. This decoration, which dates back to the original building, was covered up during the Reformation but was brought out again at the beginning of the 20th century: the paintings are still visible in the Chapel of Our Lady and on the statues of the painted portal, which is unique in Europe and whose complete restoration was completed in October 2007. The rose window is one of the masterpieces of European church art: its panes illustrate the medieval worldview in which God as creator was at the centre. The Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Lausanne is a Gothic cathedral. Construction of the cathedral began in the 12th century and took almost 100 years. The cathedral was consecrated and dedicated to Our Lady in 1275 by Pope Gregory The cathedral is known for its beautiful stained glass windows and imposing 13th-century portals. It is also home to an impressive organ, where concerts are held regularly. The central column has a circular base with arches and is topped by a ribbed column decorated with acanthus leaves, the city coat of arms and a garland carried by four animal heads. The pillar and column are copies from 1930, while the original pieces are in the Lausanne Historical Museum.

First, I remember the reference to Canterbury, a new period for Gothic outside of France. The cathedral, dedicated to Mary as Our Lady (French: Notre Dame), is the successor church to the 6th-century church dedicated to Saint Thyrsus, later named Saint-Maire. The Carolingian building was replaced by an early Romanesque church around 1000. A century and a half later, construction began again. Three construction phases can be distinguished: Under Bishop Landry de Durnes (Landric de Dornac) an ambulatory choir was erected to the east. Archaeologically proven is the outer wall of the ambulatory with round ends of three (probably a total of five) radially adjoining chapels. Capitals found still had Romanesque forms. From around 1190 onwards, under the direction of the so-called Master of Lausanne, extensive reconstruction and new construction took place: the first ambulatory was replaced by the present one, early Gothic with a polygonal ambulatory and only one, still round, axial connecting chapel. To the west, the building grew around the crossing with the lantern tower, the transept and a large part of the nave. Around 1215 the master builder Jean Cotereel began to complete the nave and build the western end of the church Around 1225 to 1235 the portail peint, remarkable for its decorative figures and the preserved polychromy, was added to the southern outer wall of the nave. Finally, in 1275, the Notre-Dame Cathedral was consecrated in the presence of Pope Gregory X and King Rudolf von Habsburg. Source: Wikipedia
