Can get very muddy. Tough but doable climb on gravel bike

This is a great bike section with a nice approach over the bridge and causeway of Threipmuir Reservoir that has great views over each side. Exponential Hill itself is a beautiful tree-lined avenue that is very scenic. The section itself is only 462 metres long but has a sharp 49 metres of height gain. A stunning place overall and a nice hill section to take in on the way to Bavelaw Castle.

This is a tricky ascent or descent to test your skills

Pretty rough on a gravel bike. Just about ridable in wet weather (with plenty of hike-a-bike) with mud-capable tyres.

There's a decent spread of exertion, several difficult sections seemed to be followed by a decent surface, where less exertion was required

You might see a highland coo or two (hey, that rhymes) in the surrounding fields. There is also a campsite on that road.

The "Buck Stane", built into a garden wall, is 3'4" in height, 15" across the widest face, and 11" thick, but it has no distinctive features. It is traditionally associated with the Barony of Penicuik and the royal hunts on the Boroughmuir (W Maitland 1753). The Buck Stane now stands at NT 2450 6922. Nice cafe on the junction out of West Linton. Nice coffee and scones. Also has veggie haggis for your morning rolls!
