The Formartine and Buchan railway line connects Dyce in Aberdeen to Fraserburgh and Peterhead. It's a popular path with cyclists, joggers, dog walkers, horse riders etc. Some sections are nice and wide, while others are more single track. There are a number of gates on the route, which are quite narrow. The path is slowly being improved in sections to facilitate better access.

The Formartine and Buchan cycle and walking trail crosses the River Don here. You can see a gauging station just upstream, past the power lines.

Maud, formerly known as Brucklay is a quaint village that once served as a crucial junction for the Fraserburgh and Peterhead railway lines. The station, a lasting testament to its historical significance, now houses the Formartine & Buchan Railway Museum. Note that the museum operates seasonally during the summer, so it's advisable to check the opening times before planning your visit.

The South Ugie Water is a tributary of the Ugie Water. This section of the Buchan and Formartine Way closely follows the watercourse between Maud and Old Deer. The Ugie drainage basin, particularly in the South Ugie Water catchment area, boasts significant traces of prehistoric settlement. One notable example is the Catto Long Barrow, situated to the south of the mainstem.

Here, the Formartine and Buchan Trail cuts through the peaceful Logierieve Wood. The path is accompanied by a display of willows, offering a canopy of shade through this section.

Here you’ll pass over the River Don, a tranquil waterway which originates in the Grampian Mountains, specifically in the Peatlands of Aberdeenshire. It flows eastward through Aberdeenshire, passing through various towns and eventually empties into the North Sea at Aberdeen.

Deer Abbey is just of the Formartine and Buchan way and well worth stopping by. Maintained by Historic Scotland and free entry, the ruins are interesting to explore. Is it said this was once the home of the book of deer, the oldest know Gaelic writing.

A good and very flat section of the cycle way. Just north of Auchnagatt can be muddy and rockier than other sections of the line, and exposed to the wind. The views across the farmland are good.

The Ellon viaduct was built for the Formartine and Buchan railway, and is now part of the public footpath. You can get a great view from here.

The café, while it doesn’t have any vegan aid in the menu, they will adapt the panini for you and they do soya lattes.

A great place for coffee and cake. They cater for vegans as well.

Café 21 at Dyce railway station is a great spot for coffee, brunch (all day breakfast!) and lunch. Lovely cakes, scones and tray bakes also available. The staff are always very friendly. There is cycle parking right by the outdoor tables and this is visible from inside the cafe too.

The Formartine and Buchan Way is a multi-user trail that follows the old railway line from Dyce in the south to Fraserburgh on the north coast. There is also a branch line that splits from the main trail at Maud and heads east to the coast at Peterhead. This section is well surfaced and suitable for all riders.

This abbey was home to Cistercian monks for more than 300 years until the Protestant Reformation of 1560 ended the spiritual use of the abbey. It is thought the abbey kept the Book of Deer in its library. This gospel book was written around 900 AD. The Ellon Viaduct is the old crossing of the Ythan for the Banff and Buchan line that ran from Aberdeen north to Peterhead and Fraserburgh. A good view all along the river and the tarmac surface is accessible for all.
