The simple late baroque functional building was hastily erected in the summer of 1783 to serve as a guest house for Karl August and his hunting party. Building materials were obtained from the ruins of Ilmenau Castle and the surrounding forest. Goethe often spent time here as a guest. The museum's exhibition is well worth seeing because it offers insights into the hunting habits and social life of the Weimar court. At an altitude of 786.1 m, we reach the Meuselbacher Kuppe. The inn with its tower is unfortunately closed. Today, the view over the valleys and mountains is dull and gray.

Open again since December '22.

Not far from Goethe's carved short poem, a detour to the reconstructed hunter's shelter is worthwhile. In the past, the hunting party used the covered corridors in three directions to observe the feeding places of the game unnoticed and thus kill the unsuspecting animals.

It was probably here that Goethe wrote his poem "Over all summits is peace" in pencil on a wooden wall on the upper floor on the evening of September 6, 1780. The picturesque shed is therefore of great cultural and historical importance.

Even because of Goethe's short stays here, the Kickelhahn and the buildings located here are of great cultural and historical importance.

Unfortunately, it hasn't been managed for about 3 years (according to our hotel manager).
