The Werra River has not one, but two sources. While the "rear source" is located at this highlight, the so-called "front source" is located near Fehrenbach. The source was first tapped in 1909. Further information can be found on the information boards on site.

The Werra River is fed by two springs and flows through Germany's geographical center. A variety of wonderful spots await the leisurely stroller along the riverside paths. One of these is located here on the way to the Eisfelder Ausspanne (Eisfelder Rest Area). The water is very cold. A seating area is available. From here, several paths lead up towards the Rennsteig Trail. The descent from there leads past the idyllic rafting pond to Sachsenbrunn with its centuries-old dancing linden tree. The dammed water was once used for floating logs, hence the name.

From Bedheim to Hildburghausen, you cycle along the former railway line. You pass this lake. A rest hut invites you to linger. It's a great alternative to the bike path.

The Hildburghausen–Lindenau-Friedrichshall railway line, also known as the Hildburghausen-Heldburg Railway, was a narrow-gauge railway line (meter gauge) almost 30 kilometers long that connected Hildburghausen with the Heldburg region to the south. The ceremonial inauguration of the section from Hildburghausen to Heldburg took place on July 1, 1888. On December 1, the remaining section to Lindenau-Friedrichshall was put into operation. The entire railway became Prussian state property on July 16, 1895. From 1920, it was part of the German Reichsbahn network and belonged to the Erfurt Reichsbahn Directorate. A trip to the Schönbrunn Dam is always worthwhile, you can walk around it and there are plenty of places to sit and take a break, and you have a wonderful view of the water in many places

The shortest option is from Bad Rodach towards Hildburghausen. It takes longer to drive via Rudelsdorf-Seidingstadt-Streifdorf, but the route is more scenic. Both options meet again in Stressenhausen.
