Cochem Market Square The numerous well-preserved remnants of the historic city wall with its old fortifications still bear witness to Cochem's vibrant past, such as the Endert Gate with the former gatekeeper's residence, the defensive tower with the Balduin Gate, and the Martin Gate with its battlements and one of the footpaths to the Imperial Castle. Also eye-catching are the town hall, built in 1739 in the Baroque style, on the cozy market square, the "parlor" with the Martin Fountain, and the old, half-timbered, gabled houses roofed with Moselle slate in the narrow streets of the old town. The Bock Fountain on the Moselle promenade represents a "Cochemer Stückelchen" (Cochem little piece), an ironic narrative of everyday life for the residents. Opposite is St. Martin's Church with its striking tower, through which you walk on the pedestrian zone. From the Moselle promenade, you reach Bernstrasse through the "Fuchsloch," a passage that was once Cochem's smallest city gate. On the bridge near the tourist information office, there is a mosaic depicting the family tree of the town of Cochem. Experience-Marketplace-Small-Houses From the market square, old, winding stone steps lead up to the Klosterberg. The Capuchin monastery, built around 1630 and situated on a mountain promontory, served as a monastery until 1802 and is now the town's cultural center. The water tower in Münstermaifeld was built in 1893 and supplied the city with water from the Severus spring. Its design is reminiscent of a medieval defensive tower. It ceased operations in 1955. Today the tower can be visited and offers a panoramic view of the Maifeld.

There are beautiful views of the surrounding area. The guided tour provides interesting information about the castle. The tour lasts approximately 40 minutes; unfortunately, you won't be able to enter the castle interior without a guide. Photography is permitted inside. You can access the castle on foot or by bus from the bus station. The castle is not wheelchair accessible.

Here you can cross the Moselle. We decided against it and drove through the nature reserve. It was a bit bumpy at the beginning but then it was a very beautiful route. You shouldn't take too much luggage with you though as the path is very narrow in places.

The view of Cochem and its castle is beautiful, if only there weren't overtourism: there were 4 large river cruise ships there at the same time and hundreds of cars parked on the banks, not to mention coaches - meaning thousands of tourists in the small town. So very, very loud, hectic and exhaust fumes and diesel in the air. Unfortunately, it's no longer a romantic place - at least not here in August 2024.
