The Rahlstedt cemetery has been the burial place of the Evangelical Lutheran parish in Alt-Rahlstedt since 1829. It is 8.5 hectares in size and has 19,000 graves. The cemetery was created to replace the old churchyard around the Rahlstedt Church and was a burial place for the communities belonging to the Alrahlstedt Church. The old cemetery was leveled in 1844. Since 1964, the field for the pastors to the left of the chapel has been dominated by the white marble crucifix created by the Rahlstedt sculptor Arthur Wiechert, which has been on the altar of the Alrahlstedt church since 1926. The “Tree of Life” has also been there since 2014, which the wood sculptor Peer Oliver Nau created within two years from a 125-year-old, dead American red oak. The cast-iron cross from 1837 for the community midwife Sophie Dorothea Freerks is considered the oldest surviving tomb. A central point is the eternity mailbox: letters to the deceased can be posted in the large cavity in and under the oak tree.
