The Schafsteg (Sheep Footbridge) is a small but important bridge for hikers and walkers, spanning the Red Main River in this wooded area near Aichig, a district of Bayreuth. The fountain is part of the Margravial Opera House World Heritage Site. All natural stone components of the approximately 100 m² fountain basin are made of solid shell limestone; a four-part group of figures in the center of the fountain contains the fountain mechanism.

In 1908, the Bayreuth City Council decided to erect an art fountain in honor of the House of Wittelsbach to commemorate the centenary of its membership in the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1910. Bayreuth, like the entire margraviate, came under the Bavarian crown in 1810. A design by Munich sculptor Friedrich Lommel won an artistic competition. The celebration, planned for 1910, had to be postponed to July 31, 1914, because the limestone fountain was not completed in time. The Bavarian royal couple, Ludwig III and Marie Therese, had announced their attendance at the festivities. However, they were unable to come to Bayreuth due to the outbreak of the First World War.
