⛪ Mariahilf Pilgrimage Church in Passau – A Place of Hope Above the City’s Rooftops Anyone who climbs the 321 covered steps of the famous pilgrimage staircase will immediately sense it: The Mariahilf Pilgrimage Church is more than just a Baroque building – it is a spiritual vantage point connecting heaven and earth. Perched high above the Innstadt district on the Mariahilfberg, it offers not only breathtaking views of Passau but also a moving history. Built between 1624 and 1627 according to plans by Francesco Garbanino, the church became the center of one of the most important Marian pilgrimages in southern Germany. The centerpiece is the miraculous image of Mariahilf, a copy of the famous painting by Lucas Cranach the Elder, which once inspired Emperor Leopold I to utter his battle cry against the Turks: "Maria hilf!" – a cry that became legendary. The church itself is a Baroque jewel: The high altar from 1729, the ornate side altars, and the so-called Kaiserampel, a goldsmith's work from Augsburg, speak of imperial veneration and deep popular piety. The adjacent monastery complex, now administered by the Pauline Order, also contributes to the special atmosphere. Mariahilf is not a place you just visit—it is a place you experience.
