Locals call the connection between Hottenbach and Hinzerath the Gerstenmaier Pass in reference to Eugen Gerstenmaier, the former President of the Bundestag (1954 to 1969). He owned the impressive villa on the side of the road.

Very nice information board, sometimes you can't find any clues! I had to search for quite a while in Kaufering! There was only a burial mound marked and a tiny little information board! You can't miss this one 👍

Unfortunately, the town is left out of the Domblick dream loop, which I cannot understand. The town is characterized by beautiful half-timbered houses and numerous houses that are covered with beautiful shingles by the skilled roofers. And of course, we must not forget the "Hunsrück Cathedral" of St. Christopher, which towers over the town.

The place owes its name to the noble Rabangar, who built a castle on the steep rock above the Simmerbach in the 10th century. In 1072 a castle chapel was consecrated and two years later Count Berthold and his wife Hedwig founded an Augustinian canonry. The monastery existed until 1566. Then the rich property passed to the Palatinate administration. The church has been a Catholic parish since 1699. In 1920 the monastery buildings were taken over by missionaries of the Holy Family, who set up a theological college. Of the medieval monastery complex, the 42-meter-high westwork with its double towers and numerous reliefs and sculptures has survived the storms of time. The nave burned down repeatedly. Schloss Gemuenden opened in 1301. It is owned and lived in by the van Salis family, so still in private family hands. It is not really open for visits, but is available for events, weddings, and such both inside and outside. In particular the gewolbe cellar is very nice, and the lovely terrace is very nice and has a great view of Gemuenden.
