The "Markersbach Dam", dammed by the Mittweida River, serves as a lower reservoir for the pumped storage power plant near Markersbach in Saxony. This pumped storage power plant was built between 1970 and 1981 near Markersbach in the Ore Mountains and consists of a lower reservoir, an upper reservoir and the technical power plant facilities. An earth dam at a height of approx. 57 m above the foundation base - forms the main dam of the "Markersbach Lower Reservoir". The subsequent hiking trail around the Markersbach Dam is ideal for hiking and cycling. A trip is worthwhile at any time of year. A hike around the Markersbach dam is very relaxing at around 6.5 km and promises many sights (it's worth taking a closer look!).

In 1799, May, a citizen of Annaberg, had a tower made of fieldstones built on a rock massif near the Wiesenbad. He gave this wonderful piece of nature, surrounded by forest - you can hear the Zschopau rushing in the valley - the name "May's Ruh". An observation tower was inaugurated at the same location on July 30, 1899, on the occasion of the first anniversary of the death of Chancellor Prince Otto von Bismarck. This 13 m high observation tower, with a wonderful view of the charming Zschopau valley, was very popular with the public and especially with spa guests. After the Second World War, the Bismarck Tower became "May's Tower" again in popular parlance, but the structural condition of the building deteriorated noticeably over the years, so that the tower finally had to be closed to visitors....

The almost 15 meter high tower rises above the Zschopautal and offers a great view of the surrounding Ore Mountains. You can get to the viewing platform via an internal staircase with 62 steps. Opening hours: April to September from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., October to March 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., free entry
