Despite their diversity in terms of era and purpose of creation, these remarkable monuments to the history of civilization have one thing in common: they are recognized by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites. The accompanying text for the episode about Graz's old town states: "The roots of the city of Graz in Styria lie on the Schlossberg hill, first mentioned in 1128. It was called Gradec, which means "little castle" in German. In the 15th century, Graz was the capital of Inner Austria. The later Emperor Frederick III had a soft spot for the city and set the first architectural standards. He had a city castle built and the parish church of St. Aegydius, today's cathedral. As peaceful as Graz seems to us today, it was always a fortified city (...)"
