The marketplace forms the heart of Waldkirchen, both architecturally and functionally. However, the origins of Waldkirchen's "parlor" lie far back in history and are firmly rooted in the town's past. As the settlement of the "Northern Forest" progressed from Passau in the 11th and 12th centuries, a new parish was founded near the salt route to Bohemia: the "Church in the Forest." The first verifiable mention of the place dates back to 1203. The bishops of Passau, who had ruled this region since the turn of the 13th century, granted Waldkirchen market rights (confirmed in 1285) and later the exclusive right to store salt, the most important commodity on the "Golden Trail." Muleteers, arriving after a day's march from Passau or Wallern, were required to find lodging and care for their horses here, while local farmers could offer their produce for sale. The resulting weekly markets and a flourishing salt trade soon brought prosperity to Waldkirchen. After the market was repeatedly threatened by Bohemian troops, the Prince-Bishop of Passau had Waldkirchen surrounded by a ring wall between 1460 and 1470, parts of which are still preserved today.
