Since 1894, the wooded Poppenberg has had a 33.5 m high observation tower in steel framework construction built by the Nordhausen branch of the Harz Club, which was named after Prince Otto zu Stolberg-Wernigerode. On the occasion of the dedication of the tower on July 12, 1894, the mountain peak was christened Fürst-Otto-Höhe in honor of the forest owner. The tower was renovated in 1994.[2] When visibility is good, it offers a comprehensive view of the southern Harz, the Lower Harz with the Joseph Cross on the Großer Auerberg, the Goldene Aue and the Kyffhäuser. The old turning body has fallen over in the meantime. You can still see the remains of the old spiral staircase that long ago allowed visitors to climb to the platform in the treetop.

Lovely and very well-kept stamping station including log book...the climb is worth it. Currently (July 22, 21) you can't get any further from here to the Wendel Oak (HWN 165). The path is closed due to forestry work.

The Joseph Cross is a must in the south-eastern Harz. It stands on Josephshöhe and is, so to speak, a piece of Paris in the Harz Mountains. The Joseph Cross is the largest iron double cross in the world, which was built based on the model of the Eiffel Tower in 1896. The 38 meter high steel framework is held together by around 100,000 rivets and weighs 125 tons. You can climb the observation tower for a fee. The best way to get there is a short hike from the Auerberg car park. If you want to do a longer hike, it is best to start from Stolberg.

The castle ruins can be hiked quickly and easily from Neustadt. It is said to have been built around 1120 and offers an impressive backdrop. It can be visited at any time and an iron staircase leads to the ruined tower, from which you have a wonderful view. There is a very good restaurant just below the castle ruins. If you want to see even more, you should continue to Poppenberg.

The South Harz is completely unjustly underestimated! There are not only great paths and interesting excursion destinations there, but also some fine mountains. Like the Poppenberg, which at 600.6 meters high offers a fantastic view over the entire South Harz. However, the mountain itself is wooded and only offers this view if you climb the Poppenberg tower. The 33.5 meter high observation tower offers a clear view of the Brocken and the Kyffhäuser. The best thing to do on a hike is to combine the Poppenberg with the Hohnstein castle ruins.
