The Hanseatic city of Wismar (Low German: Wismer) is located on the Baltic Sea coast in the Nordwestmecklenburg district of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, at the southern end of the Bay of Wismar, protected by the island of Poel. It is the sixth-largest city in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and the largest of the state's 18 medium-sized towns. The historic old towns of Stralsund and Wismar were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in June 2002.

As with all city gates in the area, the side towards the city center is magnificent and the side towards the outside is fortified and simple. The gate was the entrance through the city wall and is the last surviving of the city gates. From here you can start or end the tour of the old town.
