Since 1894, the wooded Poppenberg has had a 33.5 m high observation tower in steel framework construction built by the Nordhausen branch of the Harz Club, which was named after Prince Otto zu Stolberg-Wernigerode. On the occasion of the dedication of the tower on July 12, 1894, the mountain peak was christened Fürst-Otto-Höhe in honor of the forest owner. I've been here so many times now, in every season. The first time was an absolute challenge for me with my fear of heights. But now it gets better with every climb. And the view is sensational anyway.

The tower was built by the Harz Club in 1897 and is stamped 92 of the Harz Hiking Needle.

A bit like small Norway, Fjord has charm. Some seating would be nice.

Climbing the Joseph Cross is an absolutely great experience.

The Joseph Cross is a must in the south-eastern Harz. It stands on Josephshöhe and is, so to speak, a piece of Paris in the Harz Mountains. The Joseph Cross is the largest iron double cross in the world, which was built based on the model of the Eiffel Tower in 1896. The 38 meter high steel framework is held together by around 100,000 rivets and weighs 125 tons. You can climb the observation tower for a fee. The best way to get there is a short hike from the Auerberg car park. If you want to do a longer hike, it is best to start from Stolberg.

The Rotestein is a lookout point that is not easily forgotten. It can be easily reached via a hiking trail from the Stemberghaus charcoal factory and, at 505 meters high, offers a fantastic view of the Rappbodetalsperre, the largest in terms of volume in the Harz. However, you cannot see the 100 meter high dam from the Rotestein. On the other hand, when the view is clear, you can see Wurmberg and Brocken. A great vantage point, especially at sunset!
