Sallgast Castle was built as a moated castle in the 12th century. During the Thirty Years' War the castle was besieged by Swedish troops but not taken. It was converted into a four-winged castle. The extensive castle park was laid out around 1880 by the politician Robert Fedor von Loebenstein-Lohsa (1854-1939) and expanded in 1911.
