The name Frangokastello comes from a Venetian castle built in 1371 on a low peninsula, the crenellated outer walls of which still stand today. Above the south gate of the fortress, the coat of arms of the Venetian builders, the Lion of Saint Mark, is still well preserved. Inside the structure, however, only the foundations of the complex are visible. The castle, which was restored again by the Venetians under their commander Nicolo Dona in 1593, was later abandoned. Subsequently, the local inhabitants of Sfakio removed the beams from the towers and rooms.

Often fewer waves than at other beaches in the area. There are good tavernas right on the beach.

Nice hike, incredible view from the top. What a pleasure to find yourself next to this charming church. End of hike to be modified because the path no longer seems to exist

The fort is still being restored - with EU funding. According to the board, the work should have been completed long ago. All around everything is pretty littered

The place Frangokastello is named after the Venetian castle of the same name. The fort is currently closed for construction work.

Great sleepy place with nice beach

When the Venetians built the castle in the 14th century, the members of the Patsos family went there at night and kept destroying what had been built during the day. A commemorative plaque opposite the entrance commemorates this. The fort is expected to be completed by 2024 due to Renovations remain closed, but you can still see everything.
