The Monastery of Odigitrias is a male-led monastery situated in a sheltered location in the Asterousia Mountains at an altitude of 250 meters. It can be reached by driving through the village of Sivas in the Messara Plain. It is one of the most historic monasteries in Crete, known for its extensive holdings, including numerous chapels and vast landholdings in the Asterousia Mountains.

Asterousia was probably one of the most important cradles of asceticism in Crete, for hermits lived in the "sacred" gorges of Agiofarago and Martsalo, and these hermits later decided to build this monastery. The gorges still belong to the Odigitrias Monastery today. The area is also known as the Mount Athos of Crete, named after the famous monastic republic on the Athos peninsula in northern Greece. The development of such a strong monastic tradition in the area is likely due in large part to the fact that the Apostle Paul stopped in this part of the Asterousia mountain range on his journey to Rome.

It is one of the oldest monasteries in Crete. This humble monastery is considered an unmoving guardian of Orthodoxy and provides accommodation for visiting believers. Besides Agios Antonios, Agiofarago, and Panagia in Martsalos, there are a number of chapels and hermitages on the monastery grounds. The monastery's olive press and bakery now serve as a museum.

If you want to see something other than mass tourism, this is the right place for you. The beautiful, not too long hike (quite challenging) through the gorge of the same name ends here. A rather pebbly beach, with a few tamarisks and wooden shacks from the locals, is the reward for the effort. While there are ubiquitous jeep safaris in the better-known side bay, here you can usually find everyone.

You walk past this newly renovated monastery on the way to the Agiofarrango gorge. The stop is worth it, absolute peace - we were the only visitors, the tower can be climbed and there is also a small exhibition on the history of the monastery.

If you want to look around here at your leisure, you should get there early. Around 11 a.m. the omnipresent jeep safaris arrive and it gets loud and unpleasant. If you're alone here and can let the magic of this church work its magic on you - great!

The bathing bay is incredibly beautiful. It wasn't very crowded with us. The short “hike” through the gorge is definitely worth it. Shade is in short supply at the beach. I can still remember that we didn't immediately find the parking lot or the way there
