Toplou Monastery is a fortified 14th-century monastery in eastern Crete, near Vai and Sitia. It is known for its thick ramparts, impressive bell tower, and collection of religious art, including the "Megas ei Kyrie" icon. Rebuilt in the 17th century after an earthquake, the monastery later played a key role in uprisings and resistance during World War II. Today, the monastery produces organic wine and olive oil, offers tastings, and houses a small museum.

Sitia is a small port town and the center of sparsely populated northeastern Crete. Tourist offerings are largely limited to cafés and restaurants along the large harbor promenade, allowing the town to retain its original charm.

A beautiful monastery in a secluded location. However, you should arrive early for a visit, as it is on the way to the palm-lined beach of Vai and many tour buses stop here. Admission is currently €5 (May 2025). You can see a pretty courtyard, several interior rooms, and a large icon exhibition. The monastery's organic products can be purchased in the shop. Sitia (Greek: Σητεία) is a port town in the eastern part of the Greek island of Crete, about 70 kilometers from Agios Nikolaos. The ferry from Piraeus via Iraklion to the islands of the Dodecanese stops here. There has also been an international airport since 2005.
