Just before you reach the church on your way to Oia there's a small fruit stand selling local fruits. Kind and smiley people. Make sure to pop over and refresh yourself before continuing your hike!

From the port of Skala, you can reach the village of Thira, 300 meters higher up, picturesquely nestled along the crater's rim. Thira is the island's main town. The town is often also called Fira. The 300 meters to the town center can be reached on foot via the famous staircase, with its hundreds of steps (587 steps). Those who find this too strenuous can reach this picturesque town either on donkey back or by cable car.

My wife and I booked a donkey for the climb. Then you don't step in the donkey shit that is everywhere on the steps. The donkeys are particularly big and can carry two people. So we paid a total of 10 euros for the arduous ride and not 10 euros per person. The enterprising donkey guide initially resisted my suggestion, but I will not let either my wife or I be discriminated against because of our excess weight! When negotiating, always remember: "The customer is king!" Please avoid taking the cable car! The beautiful landscape was destroyed in its construction and who can guarantee that only green electricity is used to operate it! Even on vacation, everyone should think about the environment and take on the, albeit arduous, ride on the traditional pack animal! Once we got to the top, we rewarded ourselves for the strenuous ride with coffee and cake.

I can recommend the small and tranquil church. It is worth stopping here and escaping the hustle and bustle of tourists. If you want, you can enjoy the view of Thira from the forecourt.
