There is a small spring adjacent to the chapel. It is surrounded by a wall that is perfect for protection from the wind, making it a very good bivouac spot. There is even a table with stone benches.

Phinikia is a small, picturesque island on the edge of the saltworks between Messolonghi and Aetolikon. On the island stands a small 18th-century church dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The island was a favorite stop of the Romantic poet Lord Byron during his stay in Messolonghi. Phinikia is a truly interesting place to admire the lagoon and the local saltworks. If you're lucky, you might even spot swans and flamingos, which come to the lagoon once a year. The sunset at the site is amazing. In summer, you'll likely see people taking medicinal baths in the warm waters of the salty lagoon.

Update June 2024: The construction of the new bridge is completed, so no detour needed anymore.

A new cycle path has been created next to the road. Not quite finished yet (January 2024), but wonderful to drive. The car-free lagoon tour begins in Tourlida, right behind the Salt Museum. However, the one on Steinchenstrasse...

Beautifully quiet, not easy to ride without a mountain bike because the stones on the gravel road are quite large. But there is far too much to see anyway - it's worth taking your time.
