For centuries, the moated castle has shaped the image and history of Taufkirchen an der Vils, an Upper Bavarian community in the eastern district of Erding. When and by whom the castle was originally built is not known. Traces of a seat of power in this place can be traced back to the Middle Ages. More than 500 exhibits from the time of the great dinosaurs, their successors and the last ice age not only caused a positive surprise, but almost enthusiasm. The range of bone, skeleton and fossil exhibits ranges from giant deer to cave bears, from mammoth hair to dinosaur eggs, from petrified fern leaves to forest elephants roaming around in today's native areas. A separate small hall has been built for some of the dinosaur skeletons. The adjoining open-air garden exudes a touch of Jurassic Park (if you disregard the directly adjacent residential buildings). State-of-the-art sports equipment allows for an all-round workout. But you can also just go for a walk and watch the ducks frolic on the water. The Prehistoric Museum is just a stone's throw away.

The castle was first mentioned in a document in 1263, which is therefore his "birth certificate". The municipality of Taufkirchen (Vils) took this date as an opportunity to celebrate the 750th anniversary of the town's cultural gem in 2013. In May 2016, the municipality of Taufkirchen (Vils) acquired the castle, primarily with the intention of keeping the complex open to the public. The castle now houses a permanent gastronomy.
