in Oebisfelde is one of the oldest existing swamp castles in Europe. The castle was probably built in the 10th century to protect the Aller crossing on a sandbank of the Aller in the swamp area.

Kunrau Castle was built from 1859 to 1861 for Theodor Hermann Rimpau, the inventor of the moorland culture. The architect was a student of Karl Friedrich Schinkel and the architectural style was based on the Berlin villas in the Tiergarten.
