9월 16, 2024, View of Niederburg Castle

The Niederburg can be explored with guided tours - even at night - or on your own; it is only closed in bad weather. It was expanded into a magnificent, fortified seat of power in the 12th century by the noble family of the Lords of Manderscheid. Source: https://www.eifel.info/a-manderscheider-burgen

The Upper Castle and the Lower Castle rise up in the Lieser valley near Manderscheid. The Upper Castle was once a state castle of the Archbishops of Trier, while the Lower Castle, around 150 years younger, served as the residence of the Lords of Manderscheid, who lived there as representatives of the Counts of Luxembourg.

The steep climb to the castle is quite difficult. A real calf biter! But once at the top you forget it all. Beautiful ruin and the cave is more than worth it.

From the Niederburg via the tournament meadow to the Oberburg. There you have a view of the Niederburg. Gradweg past the Kaisertempelchen! Very beautiful! Definitely recommended to be included in a hike.

Just awesome being so close to the place and with a half day walk around and visit. For a nice stop, first check whether the castle café opposite is open; but a stop in Manderscheid is also possible.

Access to the upper castle is free. 199 steps lead up to the tower.

Beautiful view of the castles which are the best camouflaged castles in my opinion. Both castles can hardly be seen from the village of Manderscheid, although they are quite powerful, impressive and unusual. Highly recommended.

Since the 12th century, 2 castles, the upper and lower castle, have been enthroned above Manderscheid. Both castles were destroyed in the course of their checkered history and have been lovingly restored in recent years. The upper castle is freely accessible and can be visited extensively on a walk. There is a small fee to visit the lower castle. Source: https://www.urlaub-in-rheinland-pfalz.de/urlaub/590/Manderscheider_Burgen/index.htm

From here you have a wonderful view of the two Manderscheid castles. The Lower Castle, which lies on a rock below the Upper Castle, was destroyed by the French around 1800 and has been continuously restored by the Eifel Association since 1899. Walls, towers, stairs and exits can again be explored on a tour today.

Great view from above into the valley to the castle, picture book setting. A visit to the castle is also worthwhile (but it involves a small entrance fee) There is a lot to explore, especially for children.

"The Lower Castle, first mentioned in documents in 1133, was the ancestral home of the Counts of Manderscheid. The castle, which has been uninhabited since 1794, is now owned by the Eifel Association. It has been restored and today, together with the Manderscheid Upper Castle, forms an impressive backdrop for the annual castle festival with knightly games that takes place on the last weekend in August." Opening times: March/April: 9.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. May to August: 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., outdoor seating with food until 10 p.m. September/October: 9.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. Costs: Entry for individual visitors: adults €2, adults with a spa card €1.50. https://www.eifel.de/go/freizeitmoeglichkeiten-detail/niederburg_manderscheid.html https://www.niederburg-manderscheid.de/

"The upper castle has been towering over the Liesertal for more than a thousand years. It is the older of the two Manderscheid castles. The castle was first mentioned in documents in 973. It sits on a mountain peak that was removed for construction, close to the current edge of the town. As can still be seen from the ruins today, it had an almost triangular outer wall and a five-story keep that has since been made accessible again. The last resident of the upper castle was "Burggretchen", as Margarethe Zirbes was called. She left the castle in the second half of the 19th century. After that, the castle stood empty. In 1921, the municipality of Manderscheid bought the upper castle for a purchase price of 1800 marks. The castle association looks back on an eventful past of the upper castle. The upper castle is freely accessible and the keep is open." https://www.eifel.info/a-oberburg-manderscheid

<< Kaisertempelchen viewing point >> " The Kaisertempelchen was built before 1888 by the Beautification Association, predecessor of the Eifelverein. The old Manderscheiders still call the viewing point "Jackenhäuschen", derived from the field name "Auf der Jack". The pavilion was later renamed Kaisertempelchen in honor of it of the emperor or because the emperor enjoyed the view of the two castles when he visited here?" https://kulturdb.de/einobjekt.php?id=18757 "... The health resort of Manderscheid is particularly famous for two medieval castle ruins, which stand directly opposite each other on steep mountain spurs not far from the town's streets. The once massive complexes, which were destroyed in several warlike turmoil in the 17th century, are only separated by the small river Lieser , which carves a spirited path through the densely wooded rocky landscape in the valley. The imposing, meter-thick walls were not always so romantic and full of carefree fun and games. Both served as defensive fortifications in the source of conflict between the Electorate of Trier and the Duchy of Luxembourg. The hostility ran deep, people eyed each other suspiciously across the narrow valley. The freely accessible upper castle with its five-story keep still looks martial today. The Niederburg was first mentioned in a document in 1173. It was ruled by the Counts of Manderscheid, who were an important noble family in the Middle Ages. The castle, which was initially manageable, was continually enlarged and developed into an imposing manorial residence with impressive fortifications. In 1794 the lower castle followed the fate of the upper castle: French troops destroyed the historic walls and left a ruin behind. The Eifelverein has owned the castle since 1899, and it has only belonged to the city of Manderscheid since 2018.

Very well preserved ruin. Exploring them with children is a very special experience. Especially nice in late spring when the trees all around are fresh green.
