7월 23, 2023, Danube Stepping Stones Crossing
In spring it was not possible to cross the Danube here due to strong currents and high water. Now in midsummer you are spoiled for choice. Either wade through or walk over the ashlars with dry feet.

A spectacular view of the Danube valley with the contrast of gently undulating, lush green and gray-yellow, steep karst formations.

After arson, the old bridge over the Danube was rebuilt according to the old construction method, closed bridge with a beautiful carved wooden figure. Also ideal as a shelter :-) History: The wooden bridge in Zimmer is unique in the Upper Danube Valley and can claim to be a landmark of historical value reminding us of the past. The covered wooden bridge was first built in 1784 as a crossing over the Danube. In 1799 the French destroyed the bridge. The carpenter citizen Mathä Hienerwadel had to drive a cart of straw onto the bridge, which was then set on fire by the French soldiers. In 1825 the bridge was rebuilt. In the bridge, at the south exit on the right side, a board with a clock was installed. In 1945 German soldiers took down this board with the clock before they had to destroy the bridge during the retreat. This was reinstalled in the new building in 1947. The new bridge dimensions are similar to the old ones. Only the construction is different. In the morning hours of September 6, 2015, the covered bridge caught fire again due to the negligence of some young people. Since the bridge is a link between Zimmer and Hintschingen, which is also of great importance for tourist purposes, it quickly became clear that the bridge had to be rebuilt using the same wooden structure. After a construction period of around ten months, the new covered wooden bridge was ceremonially reopened on July 17, 2016 with the blessing of the Church and the public could use it again. If it is not possible to cross the stones, just ask the host in the Jägerhaus. He takes you to the other side in a boat👍

In case of flooding, call the Jägerhaus if the stone crossing is flooded. For €5, you can be poled across.

We were there on June 22nd, 2021 and couldn't get across the Danube via the stone path. It had rained heavily the day before. The stone path was impassable due to the current. If you come from the Knopfmacherfelsen, be sure to ask in the local beforehand whether the crossing is possible, otherwise you will be standing in front of the crossing and "have to" take a 13 km detour (strenuous due to the 300 meters in altitude difference) via Fridingen.
