Duke Wilhelm Ernst of Saxe-Weimar, who enjoyed hunting in the Ettersberg forests, had the hunting lodge built between 1706 and 1712. In 1999, a trail cut through the park 250 years earlier was uncovered. This "trail of time" leads from the castle to the present-day memorial on the grounds of the Buchenwald concentration camp. At this point, a pleasant rest area with a view of the castle is arranged in a star shape, from which hunting trails branched off in all directions even then.

Museum Neues Weimar The Grand Ducal Museum was opened in 1869 as one of the first German museum buildings. The Czech architect Josef Zítek designed the domed central building in the neo-renaissance style. The side projections of the Museum Neues Weimar are covered by glazed tent roofs. At the beginning of the 1920s, groundbreaking exhibitions of modern art took place here. After 50 years of vacancy, the State Museum had fallen into complete ruin by 1989 after considerable war damage and subsequent neglect, and was restored to its original state and expanded for the 1999 City of Culture year. Since April 2019, the pioneers of modernism and the Bauhaus, such as Henry van de Velde, Harry Graf Kessler and Friedrich Nietzsche, have been presented in the immediate vicinity of the new Bauhaus Museum Weimar. In 1885, Grand Duchess Sophie of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach became the sole heir to Goethe's handwritten estate. From then on, the Dutch princess, who came to Weimar in 1842, pursued the ambitious goal of making these writings accessible to the public: in a remarkably short time, she developed the plan for the first complete edition of his works, the Weimar Edition. She won over German scholars of her choice for the major project, kept some of his writings and founded the Goethe and Schiller Archive, the first research-based literary archive in Germany.

As terrible as it is, it is important to show it to your children and to talk to them about it. The only thing that helps against what I occasionally hear as careless statements from young people is knowledge.

3월 19, 2024, Buchenwald Concentration Camp Memorial
In order to make the ever-increasing number of dead disappear without witnesses, the SS put its own camp incineration plant into operation in mid-1940. She used one of the building's basement rooms as an execution site. A walk through the pathology department, where the gold teeth were removed from the dead, the crematorium with the cremation ovens and the room with the hundreds of urns is simply shocking. Unimaginable and yet the terrible truth.

The high Renaissance gable on the east side of Herderplatz belongs to the so-called German Knights' House. The name has been handed down since the 13th century. The facade that is still visible today was built in 1556. Today's restaurant name, which refers to Caroline Jagemann, is reminiscent of the long-time mistress of Duke Carl August of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach. He had given the house to the court theater actress who had been discovered by Goethe.

The building that is now the “Museum Neues Weimar” has an eventful history. Built between 1864 and 1869 as the Grand Ducal Museum for the art collections of the Grand Duchy of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach, it served as the Thuringian State Museum after the end of the monarchy. After the damage in World War II, it was repaired until 1946 for the 1st Thuringian Art Exhibition. After that, the building was no longer used in the GDR and the technical installations were expanded. The ruin was threatened with demolition. In 1996-1998 it was finally reconstructed for use for changing art exhibitions. The permanent exhibition “Van de Velde, Nietzsche and modernity around 1900” has been on display since 2019. Since 2019, the house, together with the new “Bauhaus Museum Weimar”, has been part of the “Weimar Modern Quarter”.
