The Schaunberg ruins, often called Schaunburg, are one of the most impressive historical sites in Upper Austria. They tower above the Eferding Basin in the municipality of Hartkirchen and were once the largest castle complex in the state. Built around 1150 by Heinricus de Scovenberch, a member of the Julbach noble family, they are the ancestral seat of the Counts of Schaunberg and the center of the county of the same name. Originally approximately 17,500 square meters in size, they were the largest castle complex in Upper Austria.

Schaunberg ruins: open all year round!

Well, the hike went okay. The observation tower is nice with a nice view, but the trail is very poorly signposted.
