Directly behind it is the oldest part of the city fortifications. In Schlossergasse, which adjoins the town hall to the east, are the Welfenhaus, built in the 1970s, and the Hexenturm (parts from the 12th century). The town hall already had its current shape at that time, with a high gable flanked by two small bay windows. In the 18th century, when the nobility acquired country castles, the city republic did not want to be left behind and also built a magnificent building as a landmark of Memmingen. The town hall was redesigned in the Rococo style according to designs by Johann Georg Knoll and Jakob Mitteregger. In 1764-1765 the gable was given its curved profile and the windows were framed with stucco decoration. The portal triad was given carved door wings. The skylights of the side entrances have since been decorated with the coats of arms of the city and the Privy Council. The large central gate even allowed freight wagons to enter the two-aisled vaulted hall. The old council chamber was located in the basement of the town hall. It is so deep that the temperature there is always a cool 4 °C. A "renewal of the facade" can be proven for the year 1878, with which the town hall also received a clock that is clearly visible from the market square......
