When Count Palatine Ottheinrich and his brother took over the rule of Pfalz-Neuburg in 1522, he found a medieval castle complex in his residence town of Neuburg, which, unlike other princely residences of comparable function, was structurally not as good as in the last decades of the 15th century had been adapted to the growing demands of a princely court. From 1527 he had the castle redesigned and expanded into a Renaissance castle, which in terms of artistic quality and state of preservation is one of the most important castle buildings of the first half of the 16th century in Germany.

The castle complex in the Auwald is a fine example of the German early Renaissance and was built between 1530 and 1555 as "Old Building" and "New Building". In the "old building" with high stair gables and tower with brightly glazed bricks we find the most important secular Renaissance frescoes in Bavaria. With the themes "hunting" and "love" they decorate the representative and living rooms of the count palatine Ottheinrich. In addition, the floodplain information center has been located in the basement of the castle since April 2009. It provides clear information about floodplains and their habitats, their development and their importance for flood and nature conservation.

This impressive palace complex is well worth a visit. Immediately to the left of the entrance is a beautiful chapel. The ceiling there is impressive. The palace courtyard is also magnificent. From the Court Garden, you can enjoy a view of the lower Old Town. If you have time, you can visit the museum.

An impressive building that you wouldn't expect to find in a town like Neuburg. You can save a bit by purchasing a combined ticket for the castle and the town museum. In my opinion, the town museum is a worthwhile addition to the castle, as it tells the story of life in Neuburg.

It's a great city and a wonderful atmosphere. There are so many lovely restaurants, pubs, and beer gardens, and there's also a lot to offer culturally.
