Around 1900, the hiking trails that are still accessible today were laid out in the palm forest above Freudenstadt. This was accompanied by the construction of numerous huts such as the Palm Forest, the Hausser and the Köhlerhütte. The Köhlerhütte can be seen on postcards sent in 1900 and historical documents show that a charcoal kiln was also operated nearby.
