The name of the lake was first recorded in the form Tegarinseo in 796, when the princely brothers Oatkar and Adalbert founded a monastery on the tegarin seo, which is Old High German and means large lake. A Celtic root word meaning lord or prince is possible, but also the origin of Lehm-Tiegel, which is assumed for neighboring place names such as Tegernbach or Tegerndorf.
