This was also the case with the Kocherburg, which was first mentioned in 1300 as "castrum Kochenburch". However, it is probably much older. Its name goes back to the Lords of Kochen, who defended the interests of the Ellwangen monastery in the region as servants as early as 1147. In the middle of the 14th century, the military character of the castle was lost. The Kocherburg served the Ellwangen bailiffs primarily as the seat of the administrative district of the same name, "Amt Kochenburg". From the Kocher-Jagst cycle path you should definitely take the short detour to Kapfenburg. The inner courtyard is freely accessible and the castle is simply worth seeing. Since 1999, the international music school academy at Schloss Kapfenberg has had its headquarters here. We were lucky enough to be accompanied by classical music as we toured the farm. A complete tour of the castle is only possible as part of a guided tour.

Hohenroden Castle, formerly also called Burgstall Schneggenroden, is a medieval castle in Essingen in the Ostalb district. The castle, which is said to have been built by Ernfried von Roden, was first mentioned in a document in 1293. The castle was sold in 1362 by Ulrich von Roden to Friedrich von Westerstetten for 590 pounds Heller. His son, Hans von Westerstetten, sold the castle to Georg I von Woellwarth in 1401.
