The ruin is privately owned. The castle was built in the early 14th century. Built by Archbishop Balduin of Trier to control and weaken the lords of Westerburg at Schaumburg Castle (now Schaumburg Castle). Since the 17th century it was left to decay and even temporarily demolished.

The monastery church is the most impressive medieval building on the lower Lahn, combining two architectural styles that can be seen from afar: the Romanesque style of the west towers and the Gothic style of the octagonal east towers. Its construction began in 1132 after old castle walls and rock were removed. It took 76 years until the consecration in 1208. It is a three-aisled basilica with a transept and a large east choir, which is attached to smaller apses, and a west choir. One of the most beautiful parts of the Lahn is certainly in Balduinstein. The village with the castle ruins nestles in the very narrow valley. Schaumburg Castle towers over everything.
