The Spatschlucht was formed around 1800, when the above-ground mining of heavy spar, also known as barite, began. The white spar powder was used as an additive in the manufacture of paint and paper. All in all, barite was successfully mined in the area for almost 140 years until 1939.

Beautiful works in the park

Not far from the road is this small gorge, which is definitely worth a visit. The two entrances are a bit impassable. Still a nice highlight and a great photo spot.

The path over the Mount of Olives leads partly along the edge of the Schriesheim quarry and is steep and narrow in places and quite slightly demanding. From above you have a great view of the quarry and the Rhine plain, and when the weather is clear you can see as far as the Palatinate Forest.

The Weinheim Castle Park invites you to take relaxing walks. With its exotic, old trees, flowers and enchanting lines of sight, the castle park offers an unforgettable experience. The castle park, laid out in the style of an English garden, is a place of rest and relaxation for some, but an island of exotic beauty with rare and sometimes very old trees for others. Rhododendrons and yews as well as box, holly and chestnuts characterize the picture as well as extensive lawns. The highlights are the largest cedar in Germany in the Kleiner Schlosspark, the medicinal herb garden at the Blauen Hut, the mausoleum of the von Berckheim family from 1908/13 in the southeast corner and the historical and modern sculptures. There is a strange, calm atmosphere in this place. You can meet hikers and cyclists here who linger for a while to take in the peace and quiet.
