For many centuries, a chapel dedicated to the Mother of God has stood on the Dürenberg in Gurmels. In the 5th/6th century, during the Merovingian period, a simple rectangular chapel was built, which was replaced by a Romanesque church in the 10th/11th century. A Gothic church was built on its foundations in the first half of the 14th century. It was expanded for the first time in 1662/63; a second expansion followed in 1710/11. The consecration in honor of Our Lady of the Rosary took place on October 2, 1712 by Bishop Jakob Düding. The Marian shrine was last renovated between 1982 and 1986. To the right and left of the miraculous image of Our Lady of Dürenberg (2nd half of the 14th century) on the rosary altar, Saint Dominic and Saint Catherine of Sienna can be found in a rather rare combination. Also noteworthy are the two crucifixes on the church square and in the church from the 16th and 17th centuries. The church on the Dürenberg was already considered an important place of pilgrimage in the late Middle Ages. Many people have received effective help, comfort, strength and joy in their concerns through the intercession of Mary. The patronage of the Church of Our Lady is celebrated on the 1st Sunday in October, the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary.
