The late Gothic hall church was built in the second quarter of the 15th century, severely damaged by fire in 1702, and remodeled in the Baroque style in 1720. The church building, which was extended by the western annex in 1923, underwent extensive interior renovations from 2008 to 2010.

The current church stands on the site of a former provostship (monastery), which was closed in 1811 due to secularization. In 1480 the church was consecrated under the patronage of St. Emmeram. Originally Gothic, the interior of the church was furnished in a baroque style after a fire in 1702. Here, especially in the vaulted ceiling, stucco was richly and detailedly decorated. Light shades of yellow, green and pink underline this unique decoration. In addition, the church has two galleries that are freely accessible to visitors and offer a wonderful view of the entire church. It is located about 55 km east of the state capital Munich and about 25 km north of the district town of Rosenheim. It was the seat of the Wasserburg a.Inn Regional Court, from which the Wasserburg am Inn District Court and the district office, later the Wasserburg a.Inn District Office, emerged.
