The 657m high Fuchskaute is the highest elevation in the entire Westerwald. Characteristic of the basalt summit of the Fuchskaute, but also of the entire High Westerwald, are the hedges and strips of spruce that run through the open meadow landscape. These arose as a result of reforestation plans as a countermeasure to the former massive deforestation for iron smelting or agriculture and pastoralism, so that incoming winds can be better slowed down again.

If I look at the past pictures in this highlight, then you become aware of the climate and the damage of German forests. Currently (08/22) the view from the Trödelsteine is still wonderful, but mainly of bare plains and slopes. A very sad picture with great views from the basalt stone mountain.

Update June 2021 - Quote: "The 617.6 m high Bartenstein is located in the middle of a dense fir forest" (what is probably meant here is spruce 😉). But that will probably be over soon! All around there are almost only dead trees 😖
