The Gëlle Fra Memorial originated in 1923 from a citizens' initiative and initially served as a memorial to the Luxembourgish soldiers who fell in the First World War (1914-1918). Today, it also honors the Luxembourgish soldiers who fell in the Second World War (1939-1945), the Luxembourgers who died in the Korean War (1950-1953), and the Luxembourgers who volunteered in the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). Gëlle Fra herself led an emotionally charged and controversial life.

In US cemeteries, white gravestones symbolize purity, peace, and innocence. They follow the tradition of classic, light-colored marble or limestone designs, as used in the first US military cemeteries of World War I. The uniformly white stones convey order, dignity, and consistency across the large cemetery grounds. Marble or limestone is frequently used as the material.

The Luxembourg American Cemetery was established on December 29, 1944, during World War II, by the U.S. Graves Registry to bury those who fell in the Battle of the Bulge and other battles in the region. The cemetery covers approximately 20 hectares and contains the remains of 5,076 American soldiers, including one female medical orderly. The grounds feature 4,958 Latin crosses and 119 Stars of David, along with memorial plaques bearing the names of 371 missing soldiers and plaques for 22 pairs of brothers. The cemetery and chapel were dedicated on July 4, 1960.

The castle overlooks the picturesque village of Larochette, lending it a very special character. The village's first buildings date back to the 11th century and are located on a promontory of Luxembourg sandstone, towering about 50 meters above the valley of the Ernz Blanche, a tributary of the Sûre. A fire in 1565 reduced all the buildings on the site to ruins. The house in Créhange is the only one that was thoroughly restored in the 1980s.
