9월 19, 2025, World War Memorial

The war memorial in Rickerby Park, Carlisle, is an impressive tribute to the fallen of the First World War, later expanded to include commemorations for the Second World War and subsequent conflicts. Officially opened on May 25, 1922, by the Earl of Lonsdale, it commemorates the men and women from Cumberland and Westmorland who gave their lives in the Great War. Formal gardens and a monumental entrance were added in 1932–33 by landscape architect Edward Prentice Mawson and city engineer Percy Dalton.

Hadrian's Wall was a 117 km long defensive wall built from 122 AD under Emperor Hadrian as the northwestern border of the Roman Empire. The wall ran from the Tyne to the Solway Firth, its central section following the natural ridge of the Whin Sill, a hard dolerite geological formation. This location offered Roman troops a tactical advantage: high ground with wide visibility and natural defenses. The wall served to control movement, delay incursions, and demonstrate Roman power. Here, next to Birdoswald Fort, you'll find the longest remaining section of the historic wall.

Carlisle Cathedral, founded in 1122 as an Augustinian priory and elevated to cathedral status in 1133, is one of England's oldest and smallest cathedrals. The building combines Norman and Gothic architecture, with its striking east window—the largest example of Flowing Decorated Gothic in the country. Inside, you'll find medieval choir stalls with misericords, a 14th-century star-studded ceiling, and a chapel for the Border Regiment. Built in red sandstone, the cathedral also houses a phratry (refectory) dating from around 1500, a Prior's Tower with a painted ceiling, and a gatehouse dating from 1527. Despite damage during the English Civil War and restorations in the 19th century, Carlisle Cathedral remains a spiritual and cultural center.

Great cafe with excellent coffee and scones. Hot food looked good too. Very reasonable and quick service.

The patronage of this place of worship, the Episcopal Church (Cathedral) in Carlisle, has been entrusted to the care of the "Holy and Indivisible Trinity." The following words come from the late Pope Benedict XVI (1927 to 2022) about that mystery of faith, which we, in the various denominations of Christianity, jointly worship as the ONE God in THREE Persons: "On the Sunday after Pentecost, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity. Through the Holy Spirit, who helps us understand the words of Jesus and guides us into all truth, believers can, so to speak, gain knowledge of the innermost being of God and discover that He is by no means infinite solitude, but a communion of light and love, life given and received in an eternal dialogue between the Father and the Son in the Holy Spirit—lover, beloved, and love, to use the words of St. Augustine." (Address by Pope Benedict XVI, at the Angelus on 11 June 2006)

This large church is within the historical quarter area in the city centre. These are prominent buildings of interest, worthy of a photo and stop and admire the architecture. There are cycleways on the roads around these buildings

There were signs displayed saying cycle platform or cycle storage as soon as I went through an entrance. Due to the adverse weather I was focused on other issues and can not recall exactly what the signs say. The train station offers decent weather protection. Cafes, shelter rooms and areas, toilets, it is easy to ride into the train station and is permitted

The lovely Penton Bridge sits on the England/Scotland border (the border follows River Liddel here). Very pleasant views of the river from the bridge, and if you are looking for a place to rest, then just off the bridge there are good and easy spots on the river's bank.

A minor and quiet road between the hamlet of Sorbietrees (south) and Newcastleton (north) in Liddesdale. Towards the south, you will be rewarded with spectacular views of Carby Hill.

One the many climbs out of Armathwaite Village. In my opinion it’s the best as the climb gives an extra little punch at the top with some false flat.

The present church was erected in 1841 to accommodate the growing population of the parish. It is a Grade II listed building in sandstone, with some interesting stained glass commemorating the Roman history of the area.

Built around 120AD, The wall is approximately 70 miles long. Considering its age, it is very well-preserved. It is very difficult to appreciate the vast amount of work involved without physically seeing it.

Armathwaite Bridge crosses the River Eden south of Carlisle. The river is known for the quality of the Salomon fishing in this stretch. Armathwaite Castle is visible from the bridge, a Pele Tower that was converted to a country house in 1752.

The Eden Valley in Cumbria follows the River Eden which starts in the Mallerstang Valley south of Kirkby Steven. It flows north to the sea in the Solway Firth near Carlisle. Known for it's beauty the Eden valley was a favourite walking area of Wainwright.
