At low tide you can walk on the rocks and crunchy seaweed

It is interesting to discover the traces of WW2 and the old buildings of the battery.

St Margaret's Hope is the main town on the Orkney island of South Ronaldsay. The small town lies in a sheltered bay and features an attractive waterfront, a gift shop and museum, and a coffee shop, 'Robertson's Coffee House and Bar'. Only 61m at its summit, Hoxa Hill is still well worth the climb. From here you can enjoy a 360 degree panoramic view, taking in the Dam of Hoxa, the Sands of Wright and The Wart, a chambered cairn from the Neolithic period.

In season, this crescent beach area is full of wildflowers. Facilities include a parking area and toilet block. Every August the annual Boy's Ploughing Match is held here, where the locals take handmade miniature wooden ploughs to the sand to test their skills.

In WW2 Balfour Battery was paired with Buchanan Battery on Flotta, to guard the boom defence across the sound to discourage attacks against vessels at anchor in Scapa Flow. A deterrent so effective they never had to be fired in anger.

Innan Neb was the site of WW2 gun emplacements, with a commanding view across Switha Sound.

The decaying remains of the Buchanan Battery look out over Hoxa Sound. It worked in conjunction with the Balfour Battery across the water in South Ronaldsay, covering the boom defences over the Sound.
