On Frauenberg hill near Sondershausen stands an extraordinary wooden telecommunications tower, a relic of the GDR era. Formerly used by the National People's Army (NVA) for radio and microwave links, it is now a rare sight, as most towers of this type are made of concrete or steel. The location at an altitude of approximately 411 meters offers not only a piece of technological history but also a fantastic view over Sondershausen, the Hainleite hills, and the surrounding forests. The Frauenberg was probably already a cult site, a sacrificial site, and a castle-fortification complex with four sections in pre-Christian times. During the GDR era, an East German radio tower of the NVA (National People's Army) was located on the mountain plateau. Today, you can enjoy the views "of the countryside," which are also well explained by numerous information panels.
